Spanish – Gateway To The North Channel Of Lake Huron
After 2 nights in Killarney we were on our way back to the U.S. We traveled an approximate 46 nautical miles today. One of our longest travel days by far. The weather was cloudy, 79, but we had a nice breeze.
Probably the most interesting part of our North Channel trip was our travels thru Little Detroit. It is a narrow channel between the mainland and Aird Island. Use caution when going through. It is good to broadcast a "security call" on VHF 16 to let other boaters know you are coming through. Little Detroit is pretty and a nice spot to take a video when going through if you are not busy at the helm.
We stayed at the Spanish Municipal Marina. Ben was the Harbor Master there. What a nice guy! One of the nicest people we met on our travels.
We had no problems docking. The marina was quiet. Not many people there. It does offer access to the Four Seasons Waterfront Complex, where there is a small gym, showers, sauna, etc..
We did not go to town, so I can't comment on it. We did try and order a pizza from a local restaurant but with no luck. Ben thinks they probably decided to close early or not open.
We did go to take the pups out that evening and we were attacked by mosquitoes. They were swarming around all of us and we had to run back downstairs. We spent the next few hours in our boat killing mosquitoes. Most I have ever seen! Not our favorite way to spend an evening.
Rascal and I walked the stairs of the Shoreline Discovery Trail. It gives you a great view of the marina and the area. Nice thing to do. It does warn of poison ivy, so be careful.
